The Enduring Connection Policy (ECP) is the process by which generators are connected in Ireland. It is an important element to understand to see where the market is developing and where constraints and curtailments will occur.
Thankfully Eirgrid publish data on how these connections will impact the grid in terms of constraints, curtailment and oversupply. The underlying data can be found here, but it has not been graphically represented. The following dashboard shows this data mapped via the various scenarios (ECP, ECP + 5 GW Offshore....), different time horizons (2025, 2027 and 2030) and the impact on specific nodes.
What you can see when you interact with the dashboard is the areas where there is expected to be large volumes of electricity which for various reasons cannot be used and is therefore dispatched down. Areas adjacent to nodes where large volumes of offshore wind is expected to connect can be seen to be particularly impacted.
This should send the signal to strengthen the grid, encourage demand at these nodes and manage our resources more effectively.
Please play around with the data and reach out in terms of any insights you would like to see in future.
